The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) is the apex professional body for chemical engineers in India. With over 15,000 members nationwide, 41 Regional Centres, and 47 Student Chapters, joining IIChE connects you to a vast network of professionals from industry, academia, and research.

Membership in the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) signifies a professional accomplishment. It provides access to a robust network and numerous career advantages. Members gain priority access to a variety of professional activities, including seminars, symposia, workshops, training programmes, and industry visits, often at free or subsidised rates, including the annual four-day CHEMCON professional meet. The Institute serves as a crucial forum for interaction and networking, fostering professional connections. Corporate Members gain significant advantages, including eligibility to contest elections for the 25-member Council, the opportunity to be nominated to government and non-government bodies, and a distinct advantage in achieving the recognised ‘Professional Engineer’ status through the Engineering Council of India. Additionally, IIChE offers an active consultancy programme to support members seeking to provide consultancy services. Student Members benefit from tailored seminars and from participation in competitions such as the annual SCHEMCON event, enhancing their academic and competitive skills.
Membership Categories
We offer several tiers of membership suited to your professional experience and role:
- Life Fellowship
Attaining the distinction of Life Fellowship within IIChE signifies exceptional achievement and leadership in the field. Candidates must be at least 35 years of age. They must demonstrate the requisite experience, which varies based on their qualifications: 10 years for those holding a Chemical Engineering degree, 15 years for candidates with a degree in allied Process Technology or other Engineering disciplines, and 25 years for Science graduates engaged in chemical manufacture, process engineering, or design work. Crucially, the candidate must have attained such eminence in the field of Chemical Engineering, Chemical Manufacture, or processing that they qualify for this distinction in the opinion of the Council, which acts as the ultimate authority in bestowing this honour.
- Life Member
To be admitted as a Member of the Institute, a candidate must be a minimum of twenty-five years of age and actively engaged in the profession of Chemical Engineering. Beyond the age and occupational requirements, candidates must hold specific qualifications, such as being an Associate Member, fulfilling the conditions for Associate Membership, or possessing a relevant Diploma in Chemical Engineering/Allied Process Technology or a Degree in Science. Furthermore, applicants must provide satisfactory evidence to the Council of relevant experience gained in a position of responsibility within an organisation engaged in Chemical Manufacture, Process Engineering, education, design, the execution of important Chemical Engineering work, or relevant research in recognised institutions.
- Life Associate Member
To qualify for admission as an Associate Member of the Institute, a candidate must be at least twenty-one years of age. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical or Allied Process Technology, or another branch of Engineering from an Institute recognised by the Council. Additionally, at the time of application, the candidate must be actively engaged in relevant professional work, such as chemical manufacturing, processing, design, operation, or the construction of Chemical Engineering projects. Candidates employed in teaching or research roles in Chemical Engineering within recognised academic institutions are also considered to meet the occupational requirement.
- Student Member
A candidate for Student Member must be currently undergoing training as an undergraduate Chemical Engineering student at a University or Technological Institution recognised by the Institute, or be registered to take the Institute’s Associate Membership Examination. Additionally, students pursuing a Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, or Allied Process Technology from a recognised Polytechnic College may apply for the category of ‘Associate Diploma Student Member’ (ADSM). - Organisational Membership
Organisational Membership is available to institutions and companies interested in advancing the Chemical Engineering profession and its application to industry. Eligible bodies include (a) Chemical and Allied industries and service industries, (b) Research Institutions focused on related R&D, (c) Academic Institutions engaged in education and training, (d) Relevant Media Organisations and Consultancy Firms, and (e) other organisations serving the chemical engineering profession. The final decision on eligibility rests with the Council.
