16th K. Unnikrishnan Memorial Lecture

The Kochi Regional Centre of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) recently hosted the prestigious 16th K. Unnikrishnan Memorial Lecture, continuing its tradition of honouring the legacy of the late Shri. K. Unnikrishnan (1946–1993) was an eminent technocrat and a founding member of the Centre. The annual lecture, typically held on 14 January, is a key platform for disseminating information and fostering intellectual exchange among the chemical engineering fraternity.

This year, the distinguished speaker was Dr. K. Jayachandran, Director (Technical) of FACT Ltd. (Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore), who delivered a highly relevant talk titled 'Changing Trends in Fertiliser Industry.’ The event was held at Hotel Seapark in South Kalamassery, attracting a significant attendance of professionals, academics, and students.

Dr. Jayachandran’s lecture focused on the seismic shifts occurring globally and domestically within the fertiliser sector. His address covered the move towards sustainable and specialised nutrient solutions, the increasing use of digital technologies and automation in plant operations, and the critical importance of energy efficiency and decarbonisation efforts. He highlighted how the industry is adapting to address environmental concerns while simultaneously meeting the complex nutrient demands required for ensuring food security.

Through activities such as this memorial lecture, the IIChE Kochi Centre actively undertakes a range of initiatives to enhance its members’ knowledge and qualifications. The Centre is committed to providing timely dissemination of information on topical issues such as sustainable manufacturing and industrial digitisation that are of growing interest and vital importance to the chemical engineering profession in Kerala.
