15th K. Unnikrishnan Memorial Lecture and the Outstanding Chemical Engineer Award Ceremony

The Kochi Regional Centre of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) successfully hosted the prestigious 15th K. Unnikrishnan Memorial Lecture, combined with the Outstanding Chemical Engineer Award Ceremony, at the Gokulam Convention Centre, Kaloor, Kochi, the annual event held in memory of the late Shri. K. Unnikrishnan (1946–1993), an eminent chemical engineer and a founding member of the Centre, served as a platform to recognise excellence and foster intellectual dialogue in the field.

Shri Prasad K. Panicker, Executive Chairman of Nayara Energy Ltd., served as the Chief Guest. Shri. Panicker lauded the IIChE for preserving the legacy of Shri. Unnikrishnan acknowledged the significant contributions of chemical engineers to India’s energy and industrial growth.

A significant highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Outstanding Chemical Engineer 2023 award, which was conferred upon Shri: K. R. Jyothilal IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Kerala. The award recognises Shri. Jyothilal’s exceptional service and administrative contributions demonstrate the broad impact of chemical engineering principles beyond traditional industry roles.

Following the award presentation, the K. Unnikrishnan Memorial Lecture was delivered by Dr R. Venugopal, IPESS, Joint Chief Controller of Explosives, PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation). Dr Venugopal, known for his expertise in process safety and regulatory affairs, engaged the audience with insights into the critical importance of safety standards and regulatory compliance in modern chemical and allied industries.

The event, traditionally held on 14 January each year, brought together distinguished professionals, academics, and students from the chemical engineering fraternity in Kerala, reinforcing the Centre’s role as a vital hub for professional development and knowledge exchange.
