Workshop on Legislative Role in Environment Protection

The Kochi Regional Centre of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) recently organised a crucial workshop focused on the ‘Role of Legislations in Environmental Protection,’ underscoring the chemical engineering community’s commitment to compliance and sustainability.

The workshop was held at the FACT Udyogamandal Club, Eloor, a location central to Kerala’s industrial belt, facilitating attendance by professionals directly impacted by environmental regulations. The event was designed to provide IIChE members with a deeper understanding of the legal frameworks governing industrial operations and pollution control.

The inaugural session was graced by Er. S. Sreekala, Chairperson of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), served as the Chief Guest. Er. Sreekala highlighted the evolving nature of environmental laws. She stressed the responsibility of chemical engineers to not only comply with current statutes but also actively work to reduce their ecological footprint through innovation and best practices. Her address emphasised that the technical expertise of chemical engineers is essential for successful legislative implementation and achieving sustainable industrial growth.

The workshop covered various facets of environmental law relevant to the industry, including acts related to air and water pollution control, hazardous waste management, and the regulatory procedures for obtaining environmental clearances. By hosting this programme, the IIChE Kochi Centre provided a vital platform for dialogue between regulators and industry practitioners, ensuring that the chemical engineering fraternity remains informed and proactive in upholding environmental stewardship.
